The Legacy in Motion: Anticipating Dr. Marcelo Lian’s Visit to Buenos Aires

There are reunions that celebrate more than just friendship; they validate a journey traveled with discipline and shared passion.

Today, with the immense joy of announcing that pianist Dr. Marcelo Lian will return to Argentina on June 12th, I cannot help but look back and feel a profound sense of gratitude for everything we have built since our paths crossed in academic music.

Briefly recalling the presentation of the album Eredità at the Museo Roca is not just an exercise in nostalgia; it is understanding the starting point of a project that continues to grow.

In a time where music often feels consumed in passing, almost as background noise, that afternoon we proposed something simple yet challenging: to reclaim the space for attentive listening, share music as a community, and celebrate the reunion of colleagues, teachers, and students.

A single post does not do justice to the immense work we put into Eredità; it truly deserves its own individual feature. I invite you to subscribe to the newsletter so you can read it as soon as it is published.

While you read the post, I invite you to:

Agenda in Buenos Aires: Sharing Knowledge

Marcelo’s arrival on June 12th will not just be for a fraternal embrace, but to unfold an agenda full of generosity towards our musical community:

Masterclasses and Conferences: He will present at UCA (Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina) and UNA (National University of the Arts) to work directly with piano students and professionals.

Media and Diffusion: He will participate in Radio Nacional, discussing the historical and pedagogical aspects of classical music and the school of Maestro Vicente Scaramuzza.

Streaming Spaces: He will visit various digital platforms to talk about music production, the current piano landscape, and the behind-the-scenes of his projects.

Memories of Nebraska: The Seed of a Vision

Recalling my trip to the United States inevitably brings back memories of Marcelo’s hospitality. I was welcomed into his home in Nebraska not just as a producer, but as a friend. During those days, I witnessed his unwavering commitment to excellence, both in his teaching at the Omaha Conservatory of Music and his academic work at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

I have an immense amount of photographic and video material stored on my hard drives from those rugged landscapes and the daily life we shared in the "heart" of the United States, which I have yet to reveal.

Very soon, through a series of vlogs, I will share that experience which marked a before and after in my vision. Those walks and talks about the future of music under the skies of Kentucky, Illinois, and Nebraska were the breeding ground for projects that are now a reality.

Eredità: Much more than an album

Our most ambitious work to date, the album Eredità (heritage, in Italian), is the sonic testimony of a pedagogical legacy that Marcelo received from his masters, such as Nilda Somma, tracing back to the eminent Vicente Scaramuzza. Recording Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 111 or Scaramuzza’s mazurkas was an engineering challenge we faced at Studio 0618.

Those of us dedicated to music and audio know that recording a classical piano is always a beautiful and complex challenge. For Eredità, the engineering work went all-in: we performed an immersive recording at Estudio 0618 with top-tier microphones, utilizing a spatial technique with 12 microphones, thanks to the additional equipment provided by Marcelo De Petro from Guerrilla Audio Store.

The album was conceived for both Stereo and Dolby Atmos—pending release—aiming for the listener to be able to feel the real acoustics of the space from every angle.

A Deserved Milestone: PETROF Artist and new horizons

Constant effort and artistic rigor always bear fruit. It fills me with pride to share that Marcelo Lian has been officially named a "Petrof Artist". Joining the family of one of the most traditional and respected piano houses in the world is a massive recognition of his career and dedication. Learn more about it at Petrof official website.

This alliance already has a clear horizon: Marcelo’s next album will be recorded on a Petrof concert grand piano at the Omaha Conservatory of Music facilities in the United States. This is excellent news that ensures the continuity of recordings with the quality standards we love to defend.

A reflection and acknowledgments

Eredità means heritage. The most emotional moment of the original presentation was, without a doubt, the embrace between Marcelo and the beloved pianist Nilda Somma, his first teacher and a direct disciple of Vicente Scaramuzza. It reminded us that, beyond microphones, immersive formats, or distribution algorithms, what sustains music is the human bond and the transmission of knowledge from generation to generation. Technology is wonderful, but it only makes sense when it is at the service of nurturing and enhancing that essence.

Making a project of this scale possible requires shared wills. We want to reiterate our gratitude to the Museo Roca for opening its doors to us; to Raul Villarino & Leandro Di Rizzo Pianos for providing the concert grand piano for the live recital; to Anne Sheedy Gardner for her unconditional support; to our friends at GENELEC for taking care of our sound; and to the entire community of the Escuela Municipal de Medios Audiovisuales that joined us.

Return to Buenos Aires

Making a project of this scale possible requires shared wills and unconditional human support. I want to thank Marcelo for trusting my ear and my lens since day one, even when our projects seemed like only distant dreams. Thank you for welcoming me into your home and for allowing me to be part of your Eredità.

Finally, I cannot fail to mention that this reunion holds a meaning for me that transcends the strictly professional. Marcelo is not just the artist behind Eredità; he has been a fundamental pillar in my personal life during complex scenarios. Amid situations of uncertainty and personal exhaustion, Marcelo always knew how to lend that attentive and generous ear that only true friends offer.

Thank you, Marcelo, for being present not only in the search for the perfect take or in the vastness of the Nebraska landscapes, but also in the silence of the most difficult hours.

Welcome home again, friend; Buenos Aires awaits you with open arms to continue building this story,

Music and exchange continue this June 12th.

See you there to keep sharing!
